Chery was established by government officials from Wuhu with a vision to build a domestic passenger vehicle-maker capable of competing internationally. The company launched its first vehicle, the Fengyun, in 1999 based on licensed technology but quickly transitioned into developing its independent research and development capabilities. Despite early controversy involving intellectual property lawsuits, Chery has matured into a fully independent innovator with its own engine brand, ACTECO, launched in 2006 and sold both domestically and to other manufacturers.

With an increasing focus on electrification, intelligent connectivity, and sustainability, Chery is positioning itself to join the ranks of the world’s top 10 automotive brands while continuing to serve a growing global customer base, including strong market momentum in regions like South Africa.
